Zimride Tip #2: Show Off Your Ride!

Zimride is a marketplace for open seats, so it’s important to stand out to attract passengers. Today’s tip is how to add style into your ride post.  Like Zimride Tip #1, it’s important to put your best face forward by showing off your personal flare to the Zimride Community.

1. Share Where You’re Going: Google maps does a great job showing routes, but it doesn’t showcase your road trip itinerary. Mention if you plan to stop by an In & Out (to attract newbies to cheeseburger deliciousness) or have a favorite place you always visit for a caffeine break.

2. Explain How Much Space You Have In Your Car: Tell your potential passengers if you have enough space for luggage as some Zimriders like to carry a suitcase or two when they go on a road trip. For Zimriders heading to Tahoe, be sure to say if you have space for gear like skis and snowboards.

3. Let Zimriders Know If You’re Animal Friendly: Some Zimriders like to travel with their furry friends. Definitely share on your ride post if you’re willing to be a trendsetter and allow passengers to bring a cat or dog along for the ride.

4. Show Off Your Ride!: You don’t need to be on Pimp My Ride to show off your car. Check out how Zimrider Rideshare Mark shows off his ride to his potential Zimriders:

Stories from the Road – Nerding Out

I split my time between LA and SF, driving from one to the other about every three weeks. Before I discovered Zimride, I’d try to carpool with friends, but our schedules hardly ever lined up. So I was spending lots of money on gas, feeling like an environmental disaster, and driving alone most of the time.

Zimride has made my commute so much better. It’s such a user-friendly and efficient system. I hardly have to spend time finding riders, and I can always find people whose schedules match mine. Plus most of the people are friendly, interesting, and care about the world. Really, I’ve been surprised and pleased that almost everyone has been fun, creative, and interesting to talk to.

I once drove with a young art student who was as excited as I was to nerd out about performance-art theory and how the art world works. Recently, I had a great time driving this guy who was into a lot of the same music as me. And another rider turned me on to the podcast “How Did This Get Made?”, which is ridiculous and hilarious. I’ve had so many memorable rides and met so many cool people thanks to Zimride — it has truly made my life better.

A big thank you to Jessica for her story. Make sure to read the other stories from HarmonyJane, and Julianna. If you have a story that you want to share, please send your Story from the Road to community@zimride.com!

Stories from the Road – Ridesharing 101

Welcome to 2012 Zimriders, did you have a good break? We’ve already heard some great stories from you about your ridesharing adventures over the holidays; we’re so glad we could be a part of it. Here’s one story from a student at University of Wisconsin La Crosse who uses Zimride whenever she gets a break from school:

Zimride has been the best way for me to come home to friends and family. It has been really wonderful to have a reliable place to search for rides in order to be able to visit the people I care about. It makes the hard work at school that much more manageable to be able to travel whenever I get a break.

Also, I’ve noticed that more people are using Zimride regularly, including many students from my school. It has been exciting to see so many more ride options and potential road trips I could take. Now I can always find the rides I need and at a fair price, and I regularly meet new and interesting people along the way.

A big thank you to Harmony for her story. Make sure to read the stories from Jane and Julianna. If you have a story you want to share, please send your Zimride Story from the Road to community@zimride.com!

Zimride is Full Speed Ahead with $6 million

We are incredibly excited to announce that we have closed a $6 million Series A round led by Mayfield Fund with participation from our existing investors Floodgate and K9 Ventures. This is a huge milestone that will allow us to improve and expand the Zimride experience while attracting the talent that we need to grow. And it couldn’t have come at a better time, as we recently reached 100 university/corporate networks and 100 million miles driven within the Zimride network.

It’s hard to believe that less than two years ago we were working out of a cramped apartment, fueled primarily by an obsessive need to reinvent transportation and a scrappy determination to see our vision through. Now we have a nicer office, but we’re still scrappy, and yes, we’re still obsessed.

We have a dream of a world where getting a ride- whether it’s in a car, plane, train, or space shuttle- is simple, affordable, and fun. Humans are social beings and thrive on connecting with others. And as humans, we spend way too much time getting from point A to point B, often alone. We want to make life better by making travel an accessible experience where you can make new friends. Everyone should have the opportunity to travel, and no one should have to travel alone.

And no one should have to grow a company alone. Zimride is getting to where it needs to go because of the support of users like you, our ridiculously talented team, and our passionate investors.  Thank you for giving us a chance, giving us feedback, and sharing your inspiring stories of how Zimride has improved your lives. This has been an incredible ride, and we’ve only just begun. Thanks for joining us on this journey and helping prove that life is better when you share the ride.

Heading to LA? There’s a route for that

SF to LAWe launched Zimride with the vision of building a new form of transportation by creating a community marketplace for drivers to monetize the empty seats in their cars. Today we are excited to announce the launch of our new public platform focused on popular routes.

Over the last four years, we’ve successfully launched Zimride communities at over 100 universities and companies across 30 states in the U.S. In each of these communities we’ve built up an active base of users sharing rides, whether it has been students sharing rides home on the weekend or people carpooling to work every day. In all, Zimride users have logged over 100,000,000 miles traveled.

But Zimride still hasn’t been for everyone. Today that changes. We are launching our first promoted route dubbed “the Sunshine Route”: San Francisco to Los Angeles. Over the last couple weeks, we have jump-started the route with an incredible team of route builders, so users will have options from Day One. So far during our week of testing, more than 50 seats have been booked and we currently have an inventory of 100 seats available. Seats are selling fast, so if you want a ride to LA book one today before they sell out:

Find a Zimride to LA

And for everyone who is driving to LA, you’ll receive a $20 driver bonus payout along with the money you charge for your seats by posting your SF > LA ride in the month of August:

Be a Zimride driver

SF to LA is just our first route and we’ll be launching more within the next few months. Let us know what you think and what route you want to see us launch next. For users who are part of private networks, nothing changes. You will still have access to your organization’s network to share rides with others in your trusted community or organization. However, private networks will be seeing several interface and functionality improvements over the next few months.

We have a lot more exciting news in store in the coming weeks, so make sure to stay tuned!

Cut the cost of gas in half

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’re probably well aware that gas prices have skyrocketed this past year. But were you aware how much? As of last week, the national average cost of a gallon of regular, unleaded gasoline had risen to $3.97, a whopping 36.5% increase from last year. And that’s just the average. In California, the price of gas hit an astronomical $4.25 a gallon!

Maybe it’s time to consider renaming the “latte factor” to the “gas element.”

Of course, what goes up must come down, right? Apparently not anytime soon. And since we can’t control how much gas costs, most of us are trying to figure out how we can use less of it. There are some interesting ways to help you reduce your fuel consumption, like taking the bus or hypermiling. While valid, these options aren’t always accessible—or safe—for everyone and may not actually reduce the impact on your wallet.

And the impact is significant. The average American drives approximately 13,500 miles per year in a standard gas-run vehicle averaging 25.5 miles per gallon. At $4 a gallon, that’s an average of nearly $200 a month spent exclusively on petrol. That’s enough for nearly two double iced chai extra foam lattes a day!

But what if you could cut that cost in half by doing one simple thing? As it turns out, you can. It’s called carpooling, and we’re rebooting it for the 21st Century.

Approximately 76% of commuters drive alone. So, why aren’t most of those drivers sharing their empty seats or riding together? Because carpooling and rideboards have traditionally sucked. That’s why we’re building a social network for ridesharing that makes it easy for anyone to share a ride. Whether you’re willing to drive or need a lift, Zimride has you covered. Just post your starting and ending location, and we’ll match you up with others going the same way. It’s really that simple.

We may not be able to fix gas prices. And, unlike a latte, fuel is still a necessity. Fortunately for our wallets, driving alone isn’t.

A version of this post ran on our partner Esurance’s blog earlier this week.

3 Reasons Esurance is All About Carpooling

Photo by: Divine in the Daily

Esurance is a long-time partner of Zimride. As a direct result of the partnership, carpoolers have saved more than a million driving miles to Esurance-sponsored events like the Sasquatch! Music Festival. We’ve also teamed up to make it easier for Esurance associates to carpool their commutes.

If you’re wondering why a car insurance company would care so much about carpooling, we’re here to explain. Here are the top 3 reasons why Esurance loves a good carpool:

1. Fewer cars, fewer crashes

This is a primary motivation for all insurance providers to rally behind the carpooling cause.

When we each take our own cars to work, we contribute to traffic jams and slightly increase our risk for a collision or mechanical breakdown. Congestion is a leading cause of accidents, and can have a maddening domino effect. All it takes is a single car hitting a guardrail during rush hour. Traffic thickens and becomes more dangerous as the car is cleared and our natural rubbernecking tendency kicks in. Prime time for fender benders.

Congestion also leads to road rage, which is another leading cause of avoidable accidents. Some of the most popular and effective carpools take place during commuting hours, and there’s no better time to take a car off the road.

We have a dream of a rush hour filled with happily chatting passengers and relaxed drivers, and Zimride’s working to turn that goal into rush-hour reality. The bottom-line for Esurance as an insurance company, though, is this: Fewer cars on the road makes for safer driving. And fewer accidents lead to fewer claims — and better car insurance rates.

2. It’s green

And Esurance is reaaaaaaaaaaaaally big on green. This eco-emphasis sprouted during our dot-com roots, when we helped turn a traditionally paper-hungry industry into an electronic one. In the decade-plus since, our interest in saving trees has blossomed into numerous green partnerships and tree plantings across the country.

And encouraging our customers and associates to carpool is another way we’re able to help green the planet. Consider the eco-benefits of carpooling: If you carpool 30 miles a day with 3 other people, the shared car (let’s say it gets 25 mpg) emits 3.122 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. That might sound like a lot, but by leaving Cliff’s Chrysler, Joe’s (classic) Scout, and Diane’s Prowler at home, the 4 of you end up saving 9.366 tons of CO2 a year.

That’s a full-grown elephant’s worth of greenhouse gas saved by a few friendly commuters.

3. It’s community

Esurance sponsors and supports community events from Tampa to Tacoma, and what better way to get to them? To make it easier for everyone to find a ride, we work with Zimride to create event-specific pages for all of our sponsored events.

Last year was a banner year for Esurance ridesharing. People who signed up to share rides to sponsored events saved 1,484,853 driving miles over the course of the year. That’s 6.21 trips to the moon, not to mention an army of greenhouse-gas elephants spared.

So there you have it. Hopefully that clarifies our car insurance company’s interest in filling seats as easily as possible. See what ride-shareable events are in the cooker and sign up for a seat by visiting the Esurance carpool page.

Zimride is a success at Opportunity Green Conference!

We would like to thank our supporters, investors, Moms, Dads…

No, that’s not how our acceptance speech started off, but in all seriousness, we were honored to receive the 2010 Opportunity Green Innovative Green Startup Award! There were 25 finalists, and all were very cool, sustainable and interesting companies.  Saying that they were all tough competition would be an understatement.

Our very own Lisa Galindo, Account Executive, represented Zimride at the conference and gave a one-minute pitch about the company.  I spoke with her when she returned to the office, and she said that an amazing number of people approached her after the award ceremony, and that the support was electrifying.

You can see her quoted in this recent article saying, “We came to Opportunity Green to collaborate with other credible companies who are focused on sustainable business and solutions and we’re honored to receive this award to further our goal in informing the market that we have this great and impactful social network platform which large corporations and universities can use to really make a difference.”

Commuter Challenge at Zimride!

As adults, we might document things like what we eat, our exercise, budgets and maybe an important lesson we learned throughout the day.  And heck, we might still write about the crush we have on the person at the coffee shop down the street.

But what about keeping track on how we commute everyday?

Well, people at two Zimride communities are doing just that.   Community members at George Mason University and at University of Maryland are going head-to-head in the first ever Zimride Commuter Challenge.  Starting September 22nd, they will be off to the races!  Ahem, no pun intended.

Zimriders can form and join teams, recruit others to join the Zimride community (because life is always better when you share the ride), and track how many miles they carpool.  By imputing a few more facts and stats, each individual can also see how much CO2 they offset by ridesharing.

The winner is determined on October 22nd by three factors: the number of people who use the commute calendar (aka, Commuter Diary), the number of new Zimride users gained and the total amount of CO2 reduced.

What will the winner win, you ask?  A VERY fancy trophy.  Something along the lines of what you see at the right, but we have recruited a trophy designer that is working on it.  Yeah, we know your jealous.

If you want to hear more about how to get a Commuter Challenge at your school, email us at community@zimride.com.
